Here's another approach...
Given: The ratio of boys to girls in a room is 7 to 5
This means, for every 12 children there are 7 boys and 5 girls.
In other words 7/12 of the children are boys, and 5/12 of the children are girls.
7/12 of 312 = 182. So, there are 182 boys.
5/12 of 312 = 130. So, there are 130 girls.
How many more boys than girls are in the room?
182 - 130 = 52
Answer: 52

\(\frac{B}{G} = \frac{7}{5}\)
Difference between \(B\) and \(G\) is \(7 - 5 = 2\)
i.e. \(\frac{2}{(7 + 5)}(312) = 52\)
