To cover the floor of an entry hall, a 1′ * 12′ strip of car [#permalink]
1
Since the shaded carpets were once a 1x12 ft piece, then the total area of the shaded region is 12 ft^2.

Now for the middle portion, remember that a trapezoid area is 1/2(b1+b2)h.

We know that b1+b2 must equal 12 in this case (assuming that when the carpets were cut, the width did not change; that is, width is 1 ft).
As for h, this is 10-1-1 = 8 ft
Middle portion area = 12/2*8 = 48 ft^2
Adding all the areas together = shaded + middle = 12 + 48 = 60 ft^2.

The answer is E.

Note: you do not have to convert to inches. Everything is given in ft, and the answer is also needed in ft^2. So keep it simple.
