Re: If −4 < a < 4 and −2 < b < −1, which of the following could NOT be the [#permalink]

I am not convinced with the answer because

-4<a<4 that means a is less than 4 and greater than -4 that clearly means 4 is extreme value
and -2<b<-1 which means b is less than -1 and greater than -2 then -1 will be an extreme value

So , LT 4 * LT -1 = LT -4

I just want to ask WHY YOU haven't included -1 with 4 when calculating
It is so much confusing

(A) −3

(B) 0

(C) 4

(D) 6

(E) 9

On a real number line, we always consider continuous interval for GMAT/GRE unless other has been specified (i.e., integers). Any relevant combination of a between -4 and 4 and b between -2 and -1 on a number line may result in all listed answer choices except for choice E.

Hi There!

Let me try helping you out on this one!

As -4<a<4 we need number greater than -4 and not equal to -4 and similarly with -1. Thus, we can take fractions which inturn gives us the value -4. Points to note here are, we can not get 9 as the answer by any combination. For eg. as b is negative, to get a positive 9 we need a to be negative as well. And the greatest value that we get by multiplying ab is something less than 8 (not equal to, I used approximation here) and 9 can still not be found. Thus E

Let me know if I can help you further!

Hope this helps!
