Complemented means , actually, you do have two sides of the same coin.

IF she is tough on one hand, on the other hand he was full of love

A is the answer. The other words do not fit which are basically negative words

This is simple, 'complement' means 'go along with', 'to positively add to'. She had a stern attitude toward her child so it must be complemented with something positive.When looking through the options it is obvious that the answer is love which is the only positive word in the choices
