I am unable to understand this.
stern means.. serious..tough. Now we need something to complement it ( support it, add to it )
it could be spite, indifference or malice depending on the intensity of the clue word ( stern ) but certainly not love.
Since, stern is not that much intense, indifference seems a better fit.
Please explain.
