Households with efficient appliances and good maintenance can reduce water consumption by about 35%. If half of the residential consumption in town W in 2010 was by households with efficient appliances and good maintenance, how many gallons of water (in billions) were saved that year?
A. 5
B. 14
C. 40
D. 52
E. 65

Let us first check the consumption in 2010 in residential usage, it is 50 billions
So half of it that is 25 is consumed by efficient appliances.
But the efficiency is 35%, so (100-35)%=25...
\(T=\frac{25*100}{65}\)..
Now saved is 35% of total so \(\frac{25*100}{65}*\frac{35}{100}=\frac{25*35}{65}\) 35/65 is slightly greater than 1/2 so >25*1/2=12.5
So our answer is JUST greater than 12.5

Quote:
Sir, can you please explain me the efficiency part again.. How did you take 65 in the denominator?
I was just multiplying 25*35/100
But the efficiency is 35%, so (100-35)%=25... I didn't get this line too
I was just multiplying 25*35/100
But the efficiency is 35%, so (100-35)%=25... I didn't get this line too
so Water consumption is reduced by 35%, so if initially it was T, now it is \(T*\frac{100-35}{100}\)..
so \(T*\frac{65}{100}=25......T=\frac{25*100}{65}\)
if any query still, please let me know
