Manic means insane and depressive states are two contrasts, so only paradoxical suits here in the blank.

Options B E can be discarded. Among A, C and D ,D wins because while A and C cast a doubt on the effect of the drug, D enforces that the drug works but in ways it is not supposed to. Hence paradoxical

how did you they are contrasts state , there is nothing science tell that depression and manic are contradictory states , I goes with option E
