Government officials should rely on their own judgment rather than unquestioningly carry out the will of the people they serve.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
The share of power between the government and the people has been an area of conflict in many societies
in history and even today. According to the prompt, it is suggested that government officials should
take actions on their accord instead of heeding to the will of the people whom they serve. In my opinion,
I strongly disagree with this statement and believe that the desires of the people should have
a major influence on government officials for three reasons.
Firstly, if government officials were to ignore the will of the people, the government would become
analogous to an authoritarian government, where people will want to stay in power indefinitely. Because of this
this, the officials may have the top priority of keeping leadership in charge of governing while they work
to build policies that reflect what they want to see for the overall economy. However, despite the intentions
of these actions, the end result causes someone to be hurt by the changes made. For instance, when Joseph
Stalin took control of the USSR during the 20th cetnury, he implemented five year plans to ensure the
industrial advancement of the USSR. However, these plans lead to the starvation of millions of
citizens throughout the country as the rewards of these plans were focused on bolstering the economy
and keeping the Stalin regime in power than serving the needs of individuals. The actions of officials
who ignore the will of the people can easily become politically motivated in order to maintain the power of
officials at the expense of people's welfare.
In addition, when actions and power are centralized to the government, governements can impair societal morale.
The average person tends to work more efficaciously and with higher quality when they understand their contributions
make a significant impact. If the efforts of the government communicate the importance of what a person
does to earn a living, the government can become a beneficial resource. If a governement fails to do this,
it can cause society to turn against the government. For example, American President Donald Trump frequently
labels the press as "enemies of the people" and sometimes qualifies that remark referring to media
personalities who spread "fake news". The reality of these statements hits home to local journalists, bloggers,
copyrighters, and other jobs who have hateful words left at their doors, or even worse, such as death threats.
Although a government with power concentrated to officials does an excellent job at rallying a support
base to keep support levels high. This effort comes at the cost of dividing society at some way.
Some may argue that by ignoring the will of the people, the government can serve more productively, as
the frequency of conflicts between people and government officials would be attenuated. However, despite the efficacy of their actions, would this
society not function at the expense of its people? There is no guarantee that government officials
know what actions are the best to take for the interests of their people. Moreover, government officials, by neglecting the will
of its people, assume that all demographics of their society are essentially the same and that they can represent
every citizen. To take actions and discount the interests of the people is to severely threaten the most optimal situation for every person.
