The struggle of the generations is one of the obvious constants of human affairs; therefore, it may be presumptuous to suggest that the rivalry between young and old in Western society during the current decade is (i) _______ critical.


If the struggle of generations is a constant in human affairs, we cannot say that the present rivalry is unique. Hence. choice C, uniquely, is the correct answer choice.

Here I didn't understand the meaning of presumptuous, it was an easy one though. It is creating a contrast, as it is constant human behaviour, it will be less mature to suggest ----- critical. And for this blank "uniquely'' matches best.
