A synonym for muted is quiet. It comes from mute, a word that can be used to describe some who does not talk. Positively merely accentuates the muted nature of the response. You need something here that contrasts with the more extreme “dismissive” and “downright contemptuous”. That something less extreme is needed is also indicated by the verb “doubt”. This does not imply an extreme response. “Do not mesh” is less extreme than “question the …foundation”.
