Quote:
Claim: Young people's tendency to make extensive use of portable devices like smartphones and tablets has hurt their development of social skills.
Reason: These devices encourage users to form artificial personalities and relationships online rather than fully and honestly engaging with the people around them.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.
As the use of smartphones and tablets increases among the younger generation, concerns have been raised about the effect of it on their development of social skills based on the assertion that the young people mostly dissemble their personalities online. While I do concede that such use has affected their personalities, I doubt that it is as detrimental to their development of the social skills as claimed by the prompt.
On the one hand, it is true that the use of gadgets has prompted the younger generation to spend much of their time online which has lead them to mold their personality according to their online social connections. Moreover, such people find it hard to adapt to the social norms in the real world. This is most evidenced by the "influencers" that are rampant throughout social media platform. Catering to a particular cult, most of them have molded their personalities accordingly and find it hard to make social connections in real life. This is substantaied by the profuse "cringe" videos online that depict an influencer(s) that are so engrossed in their online personality and their cult that they have a hard time interacting with people that are outside of their cult: people outside of their age bracket and people from disparate socio-cultural backrounds. Given their eggregious behavious, it is no wonder that some people claim that use of gadgets is aggravating the problem.
However, on the other hand, there are multiple instances in which use of smartphones and gadgets is has proved to be beneficial for the development of social skills in younger generation. The use of smartphones and internet has increased our ability to connect with more people more than ever and has also made it possible to create connection with peoples with whom a face-to-face interaction is highly difficult. For instance, through our mobiles, we can connect with persons that have issues with such interactions, possibly because of anxiety, depression, and linguistic as well as physiological barriers. However, with smartphones and internet, one can easily find someone or a like-minded group to open to, make honest relations with persons from diverse socio-cultural backgrounds through shared interests and language translation service online, and even help those afflicted by traumatic experiences if they find in-person interaction too daunting. Based on these evidences, it is reasonable to claim that use of gadgets has not stunted the development of social skills among the young.
In conclusion, I feel that while there are some instances in which the use of smartphones and tablets has affected the development of social skills, there are more benefits to their use for the development of social skills among the younger generation.
