Although one can go with the algebraic approach for this question but using the answer choices is also fast and fruitfull technique.

Sum of A and L is 12
A+L=12
IN 9 years, half of amy's age will be the same as lauren's age now
A+9/2=L (we will not add 9 in L's age as now is written)
A+9=2L
12-L+9=2L
21-L=2L
21=3L
