in 2002: #m/#f=3/4

in 2003: #m/#f=10/7

men's growth: #men reached from 3 times of X to 10 times X in the next year, so:
(10-3)/3=7/3=>2.5%

women's growth: #women men reached from 4 times of X to 107times X in the next year, so:
(7-4)/4=3/4=> 0.75 %

This is a question about % increase or decrease

The ratio is just another way to calculate the two percentages

It depends how much is the decrease.

If the female back to 3 from 4 the ratio is the same BUT if decrease to 1 the A is the answer.

But because we are dealing with absolute numbers, we do KNOW how much is the decrease then and now, we will know the answer.

The decrease is certain NOT a possible range

Hello, can you clarify what the absolute numbers are stated in the problem? The problem simply says, "ratio" but does not appear to actually give numbers.

Because we are not given the totals. Eg. the total number of workers could 70 in 2002 (30:40 split) and 170 (100:70 split) OR 1700 (1000:700 split). Ratio for 2003 is the same in both cases but % change will be different

It does not matter

When the ratio is 3:4 , male to female

the numbers could be 75 :100 or 150:200

When you have the shift in the numbers (increasing or decreasing) the % change DO NOT change regardless the numbers

That's why the GRE is a test of logic

Using algebra

In 2002

M F
3x 4x

In 2003

M F

10y 7y

Quant A

Percent increase of males

10y - 3x/3x X 100

Quant B

Percent increase in number of females

7y - 4x/ 4x X 100

Divide both sides by 100

A

10y - 3x/3x

B

7y - 4x/4x

Multiply both sides by 3x

A

10y - 3x

B

21y - 12x/4

Multiply both sides by 4

A

40y - 12x

B

21y - 12x

Add 12x to both sides

A

40y

B

21y
