The fast approach is to recognize that we have (4a + 1) "hiding" in the expression 8a - 2
Given: 8a – 2 = 22
Divide both sides by 2 to get: 4a - 1 = 11
Answer:

Alternatively, we could have also solved the given equation first.
Given: 8a – 2 = 22
Add 2 to both sides: 8a = 24
Solve, a = 3
So, 4a - 1 = (4)(3) - 1
= 12 - 1
= 11

This is a relatively easy question. Do not rely on luck and assume you'd see things like this on the test.
This is so, because this question has no "gotcha" elements (which is uncommon for the real GRE).
