1. The part of the sentence related to blank is:
While it is tempting to think that artists like Picasso literally see the world in a markedly different way,

2. "While" at the beginning implies, we have to find a word that conveys a meaning that is opposite of "markedly different way"

1). the questions gives contrast with while, contrast to ways in which world is seen by the artists. Author is trying to tell that the artists view the world same as everyone else, at least at first.
2). they go from realistic sketches to their masterpieces - "through a series of ever more abstract steps", i.e. they evolve it step by step, therefore, the answer is iterative.

from realistic sketches to abstract (imaginative) steps, so it means from real to imaginenative and it happend agaian and again to form his idea; thats why iterative works well

iterative (through series of even more abstract steps) is the best match as it represents opposite of imagination stated in the question.
