Hi,
I do not know where you have found this question but it comes from the old GRE. It is no longer tested in the way it was
I do think if you have formulated the question to look like the new format you lose completely the meaning of the sentence. Simply because it tests you in a different manne, no longer in use.
Let me know what do you think about.

from my perspective,undermine and necessary are too negative words to deal with ,so by process of elimination,answers come out to be B,F
