Re: Urgent - Please rate this Argument Task out of 6 [#permalink]
I have read about this on HyperOutdoor already. Its a very critical topic to discuss about. On HyperOutdoor it is given that too that skating is a safe road activity to do, or you can say that is an out door activity that should be prohibited in the indoor or the plaza type areas because it also disturb the other people walking over there. For detail you can visit on the HyperOutdoor.

Re: Urgent - Please rate this Argument Task out of 6 [#permalink]
The proposal to prohibit skateboarding in Central Plaza can increase the shoppers like the past offers an interesting argument but to move forward on this argument the proposal requires more thought and evidence . The author misses out some important evidence which can clarify the doubts.

The author states that over the past two years the number of shoppers in Central Plaza has been decreasing but the author does not provide any data to support the statement . This leads to many assumption like as the profit of Central Plaza is decreased , the author concludes that the number of shopper is decreassed . So it leads to some unaswered questions like What is the profit during these two years? How many shoppers shop during last two years? Answering these questions can shed more light to this argument.

Moreover, the author also states that the increasing popularity of skateboarding is the cause of decreasing the number of shoppers in Central Plaza but he fails to support the statement. May be the quality of the products are decreased over last two years so that the shoppers are not interested to shop from Central Plaza. This leads to some questions like Is the quality of the products are same since past two years? Are the shoppers satisfied with Central Plaza? These questions open some gray area to this proposal.

In the addition, the author also states that as the number of skateboard uses are low so that the shoppers are not interested to shop from Central Plaza . May be due to some other important factors like security, after sells service the shoppers are not interested to shop from Central Plaza . This statement also fails to justify.

Again, we come to know that the author thinks that due to the increase of the litter and vandalism throughout the plaza the shoppers count decreased. This leads to some questions like How the author know that? Who are they? Who told this ? Where is the evidence? These unanswered questions make the statement weak.

So without being tendentious, the synoptic conclusion of this argument is, the proposal is not at all palatable and due to the lact of evidences the statement fails to justify.

Please Rate the essay from 6.

The author concludes that skateboarding is the issue because of which the central plaza is losing business and people are losing interest in these shops. This argument does not provide any specific evidence to make point cogent. There are several issues with the argument. Also, questions should be asked about the central plaza, as these shops were out of business for over two years.

Firstly, The author claims that because of skateboarding business has reduced that means there would have been at least, a few unfortunate cases created by the skateboarder and after only the popularity of the Central Plaza has declined. The author fails to point out any such cases or count of such cases that could illustrate his reason more efficiently. In addition to this, This scenario might be the exact opposite, as people started losing interest in Central Plaza, skateboarders were attracted to this as, it was mostly less crowded.

Secondly, As the author states that over the past two years the Central Plaza is less in demand, that indicates there must be some other means by which people of the society are fulfilling there needs. For example, there are might be some new malls or new shopping complex which provide service to the public and help in fulfill their daily needs. This might be one more reason that could raise question on the argument, is the central plaza is capable enough to bring back into business even if the skateboarder's are banned?. The argument fails to consider this possibility, that could challenge the prediction made by the argument.

Lastly, As the author claims, there are increased amount of litter and vandalism through out the plaza, this might be one more reason why individuals are looking for other malls or shopping complex for their needs. as a result there is decreased business in the Central plaza. In order to make the prediction of high business more convincing the author should also include any prospective idea or proposal for fixing the place to attract more people and get high business.

In sum, even though it is understandable that skateboarder might create some issue for the shopper, it is not correct to blame the whole thing on them. There might the possibility of competition in the market that could have decreased the popularity of the Central Plaza. The author should include such possibilities before predicting or hoping the high business in the central plaza.

Re: Urgent - Please rate this Argument Task out of 6 [#permalink]
In a letter to the editor, a Central Plaza store owner writes that prohibiting skateboarding in Central Plaza will have a beneficial effect on bringing business back to its "previously high levels." This store owner bases his recommendation on the inverse relationship between the number of shoppers and popular of skateboarding, and also pulls in the increase of littering and vandalism as part of his argument. To assess the validity of his recommendation to proscribe skateboarding, however, there are three critical questions that must be addressed.

To begin, how likely is it that the number of shoppers decreasing correlates with the "dramatically" increasing popularity of skateboarding? Highly unlikely - even with solid proof. This line of reasoning is flawed in that assumes that the inverse correlation of these two events means that one caused the other. However, there are clearly other alternate explanations. For example, it is possible that the shopper decline in the area actually led to the increase in skateboarding as a neighborhood pastime. In fact, it can be imagined that folks in the neighboring area, upon noticing the lack of population in the Plaza, discover now view it as a strong spot for skateboarding due to its terrain. In another instance, perhaps, the popularity of skateboarding simply rose due to social media advertisements over the past two years (which may have started a new trend). If either of these scenarios have merit, it is likely that the store owner's recommendation of proscribing this physical activity in order to bring back business will have little to no effect.

Secondly, we must ask the question: what were the businesses like? Have they changed in the past two years? The store owner simply uses the increase in skateboarding as a scapegoat for failing business but provides no solid evidence. It is possible that even prior to this "two year" timeframe, the businesses were already showing declining shoppers. Plus, declining shoppers doesn't necessarily correlate with declining revenue. There is potential that store owners are facing competition in their respective fields. For instance, a store owner in the grocery business at Central Plaza may have to fight against a new booming lower-cost supermarket in the town just a few minutes over. Such a scenario could easily lead to a decreasing number of shoppers in the Plaza. In another case, the store's may no longer be selling items that are in demand to the newer crowd if the demographics of the time have changed in the past two years. Without evidence of business numbers and trends prior to the two years, neighborhood demographics, and competitive analysis, it is impossible to evaluate this rather fatuous argument.

Lastly, what is the likelihood that proscribing skateboarding will bring business back? In the current argument, the author points out an increase in litter and vandalism and implies it is tied to the increase in skateboarding. However, there is no proof given regarding this implicative link. There is a high possibility that the increasing popularity of skateboarding actually brought in more shoppers but it was the vandalism that brought down the business. Such an implications warrants a customer survey to provide proof of the decline in shopper to assess the customer satisfaction rates. Plus, it is important to ask whether or not prohibiting skateboarding will affect their shopping habits. Also, from a logistical perspective, the change of prohibiting one activity might just lead to another. Without answers as to how such a plan will be enforced makes this store owner seem like an arrant fool.

In conclusion, based on the three points above, the Central Park store owner's recommendation appears to be more of a passionate declaration to rally change rather than a cogent argument. To better evaluate the validity of his arguments, it is important to gather more quantitative data around the business models of the stores, the demographics, and competitors, and to gather qualitive information from neighboring residents. Only when armed with such information can the store owner build a case for prohibiting skateboarding to bring Central Park back to its former glory.
