However, keep in mind that the pets, themselves, could be "overreacting" to many different kinds of disturbances; it's not just instances of neighborly disputes. The dogs might bark at just about any close physical disturbance they experience, because they begin to associate the disturbance with other times they wanted to bark, namely, the delivery of packages. They might even bark at deliveries next door, because these deliveries are a bit too close for comfort. They may start barking because they hear other dogs barking. It could become a learned response or a form of behavioral conditioning, if you will.
However, it can also be the case that dogs, which, after all, are pretty intelligent animals, might learn through their superior senses of hearing and scent detection, that "Oh, it's just this mailman. He's here for a moment and then gone. He's not going to intrude seriously into my 'territory.' Also, pet owners are often (not always) successful at telling their pets to chill. Be quiet, etc. To a certain extent the degree to which a pet owner wishes to manage a pet often determines how noisy the pet might be. Finally, some dog breeds are more high strung than others.
