While the subject of numerous studies and self-help books, attaining happiness is often made more challenging by the fact that the concept of happiness itself is open to broad interpretation;
psychologists are undecided whether happiness is merely _______ emotion that one can experience only momentarily, a fixed state of being that one achieves, or something in between.

answers should be close in meaning with the momentarily, out of the given options only 2 are valid. Transient and an ephemeral

The last sentence says that happiness is either fixed state or momentarily. So our filler word is not stable.

transient and ephemeral makes the best pair.
