Those who look deeper, find the desert a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life. For casual observer, the blanks must support the opposite of it.

Arid and Desiccated are some technical adjectives supporting the desert and are incorrect in this context.

Verdant and Lush means greenery (opposite of a desert) and are incorrect.

Desolate (uninhabited) and Inhospitable (harsh and difficult to survive) are the correct terms supporting the context.
