Helle sir, shouldn't option (A) be Abated instead of Bated? Cannot find a definition for Bated which means diminishing but there is indeed one for Abate.

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/bated

restrained or lowered

A has correct spelling sir

Isn't bated in "bated breath", the result of losing the "a" in "abated breath"? Its the result of not pronouncing the "a" in front of "abated". So basically, incomplete pronunciation.

"to abate" means to diminish, as in "the storm abated".

So, when one is breathless, the breath has abated or diminished. Which is pronounced incorrectly as bated breath.
