The following appeared as part of an article in a business magazine.
"A recent study rating 300 male and female Mentian advertising executives according to the average number of hours they sleep per night showed an association between the amount of sleep the executives need and the success of their firms. Of the advertising firms studied, those whose executives reported needing no more than 6 hours of sleep per night had higher profit margins and faster growth. These results suggest that if a business wants to prosper, it should hire only people who need less than 6 hours of sleep per night."
Write a response in which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.
My Answer:
In the article from a business magazine, it is stated that one should hire people who sleep less than 6 hours to get more profits.
This conclusion is based on the reporting of executives who gained higher profits by sleeping less than 6 hours per night. However, it is not entirely and logically
convincing because it is based on a few unproven assumptions.
First, the argument assumes that the profits of a business is only depends on the number of hours that the people sleep.
It is possible that a person who sleeps less than 6hours and has no much understanding of business ,cannot bring profits to the business.
Further, there is a possibility that a person who sleeps more than 6 hours has good knowledge about the business and may fetch better results
than the person who sleeps less than 6 hours. If either of these scenarios has merit, then the conclusion drawn in the original argument is significantly weakened.
Second, the argument compares 300 females and males with everyone. However, this not might be the case with everyone else.
It is possible that a Business which hires people who sleeps 8 hours per night might be successful than the business which hires people who sleep less.
we cannot come to an conclusion about whole world by just taking 600 people in a survey. If the above is true, then the argument does not hold water.
For all these reasons, the argument is not completely sound.
The argument might have been strengthened if only the author had provided more reasons for getting profit as sleep is not only the criteria for a business to be successful.
