Claim: Universities should require students to take courses outside their major fields of study.
Reason: Exposure to a variety of academic disciplines helps students develop broader perspectives and critical thinking skills.

The contemporary education system is aimed at inculcating students with knowledge and skills required to fulfill the ambitions of the students, simultaneously satisfying the ever growing need of skilled employees in the work place. Universities and colleges provide a learning environment for students to learn and grow becoming the builders of our nation. But the ever growing demand for refinement and development at the moment requires students to have knowledge outside of their major field. So it is imperative that universities should offer courses or even encourage students to take courses that give them a different perspective of their major which is possible if they are encouraged to look outside of their field of major. I strongly agree with the claim because of the exposure to different academic disciplines can expand the horizons of a students. However i concede that the variety should be limited as it may distort the expertise to a particular subject making them a master of none.

One reason for the stance taken is the ever growing demand for a better product or a service. The changing circumstances of our human society forces the industries to adapt ,therefore, a need to looking outside of their field of expertise could potentially fulfill it. For example, the surgical instrument used by the surgeons a few decades ago were not as precise and accurate, and convenient to use. The recent invention of CAD (Computer Automated Design) made it possible for a better design, often going to micro precision which also fits perfectly into a surgeons hand. Another example can be seen in automobiles, the stringent emissions rules imposed on the automobiles forced the auto makers to look for fuel injection systems, the electronic control and the Catalytic converters which belong to electronics and chemical field of expertise making it possible to meet the industry standard. In these aforementioned examples, the importance of outside knowledge is clearly visible in terms of adaptation.

Another reason is the need for quality. The companies constantly battle in the market to be relevant. Poor quality product or a service can damage their reputation potentially yielding losses. For example, the screws, gears and many mechanical components need to be of good quality as they may be involved in constructions of building, movable bridges etc. Few decades ago these parts were made using the casting method which is notorious for its nature to induce pockets of air into the metals, compromising the product. The present manufacturing processes however, use laser technology, forging methods which require a massive amount of force coupled by hydraulics to ensure that the product meets the quality standards. As seen in the examples the involvement of laser and hydraulics which are entirely different from the manufacturing field play a crucial role in delivering the standard required, which is possible if students in university are exposed to such fields, gaining the understanding of the interplays between different subjects.

However, too much variety in the curriculum can often have negative effects on students. Exposure to many different fields can obscure students from mastering a certain skill, which is not ideal for any industry. For example, a business student interested in computer science, electronics engineering and aeronautical engineering courses cannot really find any relevance in his or her field of interest. A business major's primary focus should be to master the art of trade, dealing with customers, understanding clients which are not possible unless the said student focuses on relevant courses. Although an insight into a different subject can help them but only to a certain degree, such as enabling them in communicating with clients effectively by explaining their core procedures.

In conclusion, It is indeed quite important for the students to expose themselves to a different expertise, enabling them to better understand their core field. Learning a variety of courses helps students to look at their own skills from a different perspective, even sparking a revolutionary idea that may change the world for better. But it is crucial to limit the variety, keeping it relevant to their job. The interest in a different expertise can be out of curiosity but if left unguided can leave students wondering or perplexed as to what should they need to pursue.
