Actually, the audience understands the difference. So, they do not believe the actor who stars IS ONE person.

Didn't understand this interpretation? Can you help.

The young man and the old man are interpreted by TWO different actors. There is not a smooth transition between the youngest and the oldest such that the audience DO NOR recognize that they are two different actors

All this mess is not credible therefore the do not believe

Good GRE problem will always eliminate other strong candidate answers. In this one, the candidates are confusion and disbelief, since they can distinguish different character being portrayed by the same person but the plot doesn't tell so.
