Regardless the OE

We do have that each side reached a dead end. No move. An impasse. Locked in. stuck

Now, if we are STUCK in a position it is true that NO one could going back or regress. However, the meaning of the sentence is that NO ONE will concede or turn back. I.E NO ONE wanted to be defeated

Capitulate = defeated
As a matter of fact, you do have later in the sentence "keep their relationship strained and fragile for years to come."

That means IF you regress you can step back even an inch but also you can move forward towards your counterpart. back and forth. and make a possible agreement

When you are stuck then you will be in a position , USUALLY, when you do not move. I do not move, you do not move. Both we do not wanna be defeated = not move= stuck= impasse

I hope this helps

Hi Carcass, it does. Even if backward, regress can be considered a movement but we have a stalemate situation here.
Thank you.
