Basically it was impossible to debate logically/rationally for Yooks and Zooks. This fits the connotation of the overall sentence - we are looking for a positive word in the blank.

Thus rationally debating was impossible for the Yooks and the Zooks.

"with each side developing bigger and better weapons"

the above phrase coming right next after the blank, it is clear that they allowed things to escalate, the natural consequence of not recognizing the absurdity of the conflict.

And the creation of bigger and better weapons by both sides led to the threat of mutual destruction.

The answer choices are C, F and H
