The family as a whole (The Johnsons) from the outside were not known as unusual family, they were normal. However, even if they act differently from other people they were not bothered by no means.

Hope now is clear

Compliance means obedience or willingness to obey.
Pettiness means small-minded or trivial.

Is complaisance an English word? I thought it was French.

I think the actual meaning is quite the opposite. The family was known for deviating from norms which points towards (C) conformity, and to underscore it further, author gave evidence as none of the family member was afraid of being observed as eccentric (E)
