Weird sentence

As per the meaning of the sentence, the actor was NOT a drama character. In other words, he was NOT an actor who his main roles were in the drama. Maybe he was a professional in action movies. who knows.

Nonetheless, his performance was tearfully emotional

That's why the despite at the beginning of the sentence

Despiste he was NOT an expert in this, he gave a good performance in that sense

let me know is now is more clear

Always work NOT in the automatic pilot: always understand the real meaning of the sentence. Its flow. Do not work out mechanically despite + word= shift= the two blanks are on the opposite.

yes they are but never work like a robot
