From the context of the sentence, it is clear that both the blanks will be opposite to each other.
As society grows & evolves, its culture evolves, too. So an art or musical performance that was once considered obscene may now be seen as dull/normal/uninteresting.
All in all, we need the opposite pairs and only the highlighted words make sense.
