I can’t dispute that children might learn something from their toys. What I do dispute, however, are the grandiose conclusions that the so-called “experts” have drawn from that simple fact. Some have gone so far as to claim that toys are (i)_____________________ to teaching children about their cultures, maintaining that, without toys, children would have difficulty adjusting to the ways of the world. I disagree with this conclusion, and believe that children play with toys to have fun, not to create some sort of cultural microcosm. Perhaps those who speculate about the (ii)_______________ significance of childhood recreation should spend more time playing with toys and less time writing about them.
