The use of "but" in the sentence hints that ____ will be an antonym or contrast of "strengthened".
Antonyms of "strengthened" are weakened, decreased, or reduced.
"Tenuous" means weak or fragile. This means the weak connections were ____ to only leave the strong ones.
We're looking for a synonym of eliminated. (This is consistent with the hint, since eliminated and "strengthened" are antonyms.
(A) reinforced is an antonym of eliminated, so this does not work. Also, if the tenuous ones were reinforced, that would be both tenuous and strongest would remain, which doesn't fit the sentence.
(B) reproduced is also an antonym of eliminated.
(C) replaced is not a synonym of eliminated, and it's a direct antonym of decreased.
(D) stimulated, in this context, means development of the "tenuous" bonds were encouraged, so this does not work.
(E) severed, in this context, means the connections were broken off, so this is the correct answer.
