Medieval cathedrals are considered as marvels then and now. The phrase "but as far as modern science is concerned" suggests that the parallel does not apply to medieval science. In fact it is explicitly stated to be irrelevant in the best case scenario. What about the worst case scenario? We need a word stronger than irrelevant. Only antithesis fits the bill.
