Unless I'm wrong, profession should be position here. Nevertheless, the best way to answer this one is to rule out words. Intransigence refers to an unwillingness to change one's mind and indigence refers to a state of poverty. Neither of these are an antithesis to art according to the sentence context which say that the actor's performance was 'campy' which means 'extremely exaggerated'. So we choose 'melodrama' for our first blank. The sentence then says that his performance was undoubtedly ______. We need a word that evokes a similar to melodrama, maudlin is the perfect fit as it means 'sentimental'. Therefore we choose A, E.

Despite indicates a shift, so first and second blank should be opposite.
Melodrama is similar to Maudlin (extra sentimental/self pitying) --> so this should be incorrect in my opinion.
