Re: The new administration chose to emphasize a well-rounded experimental [#permalink]
Disagree, again. D is the correct answer. Ever since Sputnik the emphasis in schools has often been the so-called "hard core" subjects: Math, English, Sciences, some technologies. Very much "dominant." Very much college-oriented. The Arts and Humanties were highly valued as well, but were seen as vital only to those students who were clearly headed for those careers and Trade Schools for those who needed some basic mastery in Science, math, English, and Technology, but less theoretical and more hands-on.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Since the "arts and trades" are now emphasized in this new "experimental curriculum," we can infer that they were previously not emphasized, and the word in the blank should indicate that they were not considered the proper foundation of an education. Choice (E) inappropriate works in this context. None of choices (A) crucial ("critical"), (B) compulsory ("required"), (C) massive ("bulky and heavy"), or (D) dominant ("commanding, influential") are suitable.

Choice ( $E$ ) is the credited response.
