The sentence says cryptozoology is based on a notion that is "every bit as _________ as the very quarry it aims to study."
The "quarry" (the creatures cryptozoology studies, like Bigfoot) are elusive - hard to find or pin down.
The notion is "one cannot disprove the existence of that which does not exist" - which is logically tricky or hard to grapple with, so "elusive" in an abstract sense fits well.
- A. mysterious - possible, but "elusive" is more precise because it matches the "quarry" being hard to capture.
- B. irrefutable - not fitting; the notion isn't necessarily irrefutable, it's slippery.
- C. cautious - doesn't fit.
- D. elusive - directly parallels the nature of the quarry.
- E. fundamental - not fitting.
Answer: D
