Explanation
Blank (i): B. deprecate
The sentence describes cities that fail to win an Olympic bid and then portray the Games as a wasteful expense they were lucky to avoid.
-A. covet - to desire something strongly. This does not fit because the cities are now criticizing the prize.
-B. deprecate - to express disapproval of or disparage something. This fits the cities' attempt to portray the Olympics negatively after losing their bids.
-C. extol - to praise enthusiastically. This is the opposite of the intended meaning.
Blank (ii): D. belied
The word “although” introduces a contrast: the cities claim to be relieved, but they quickly prepare another bid.
-D. belied - contradicted or shown to be false. Their eagerness to bid again contradicts their professed relief.
-E. corroborated - confirmed or supported. This contradicts the sentence's logic.
-F. tempered - moderated or made less intense. The new bid does more than merely moderate their relief; it undermines the sincerity of that relief.
Answer: B and D
