churlish means indeed rude. This opinion is false, they have this impression of him at glance but indeed it is not.

False is the right fit for the second blank.

Most important part of the question I think is "recognition" which is used for positive things and "while" with often should make you sense there is a detour. i.e., something must be opposite to what has been done in the first part of the sentence, which is false or "mistakenly".

I hope this helps out.
