I don't think crescendo works here, because it means: a progressive increase in intensity. However, we know that the shelling both stopped and started suddenly. The other two options for (i) don't work either.

Agree with you that the other 2 options don't work here, but "crescendo" is fine, it also has a figurative meaning - that is the highest point reached after progressive increase in intensity. Hence is the best fit for the blank.

Having built up to a (i)_____noun(obj)____, the shelling stopped as suddenly as it had begun; gazing at the drooping barrels, one might be forgiven for thinking they(barrels) were rendered (ii) ____obj(negative)_____ by the pathetic sight of their (iii) ____adj(negative)______ tar¬gets.

Blank (i) Blank (ii) Blank (iii)
(A) pique(negative) (D) sidereal (G) ethereal(neutral)
(B) crescendo(neutral) (E) woebegone(negative) (H) effulgent(positive)
(C) euphony(positive) (F) erroneous(error/wrong) (I) haggard(negative)
