You have to remember this curve.

Given that mean of Maple trees is 42 and standard deviation is 7.4.

Now we want tree larger than 49.4 is all trees greater than one standard deviation. From figure we see that it accounts for \(13.6%+2.1%+0.1%\).

So number of tree more than one standard deviation is = \((13.6%+2.1%+0.1%)*50\) trees = 7.9 or approx 8.

One more subtle point to discuss here is that there is no mention of Normal Distribution in this question statement.Though your answer is correct, but what makes you assumes that the question is based on Normal Distribution?

In this post we are mixing apple with orange. A question about SD with the tags option.

What is happening to you Dear Yasir is really odd. A registered user has the tag option both under a new post and after when it is created.

I will see why. But there is nothing to be disappointed :)
