Quantity A
Quantity B
\(\sqrt{x}-\sqrt{y}\)
\(\sqrt{x-2\sqrt{xy}+y}\)

A) Quantity A is greater.
B) Quantity B is greater.
C) The two quantities are equal.
D) The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

Diagnostic #4

I believe the correct answer is D

Consider these two cases:

case i: x = 4 and y = 1
We get:
QUANTITY A: 1
QUANTITY B: 1
In this case, the two quantities are equal

case ii: x = 1 and y = 4
We get:
QUANTITY A: -1
QUANTITY B: 1
In this case, Quantity B is greater

Answer: D

Brent

Yes Brent, you are absolutely correct.
The source has given the OA as C, but they have missed out on \(\sqrt{(x-y)^2}\) can be both +(x-y) or -(x-y) depending on which value s
is positive.
Edited the OA. Thanks

I don't understand would you please explain in detail

Square both A & B and you'll see they are equal BUT squares of a -ve value is equal to square of the same +ve value as well.

A can be -ve or +ve based on values of x & y BUT B will always be positive as it is under root.

Hence D
