GIVEN:
3a − 2b = 9
5a = 34 − 3b
Add 3b to both sides of the bottom equation to get:
3a − 2b = 9
5a + 3b = 34
Multiply both sides of the TOP equation by 3, and multiply both sides of the BOTTOM equation by 2 to get:
9a − 6b = 27
10a + 6b = 68
ADD the two equations to get: 19a = 95
Solve: a = 95/19 = 5
Now that we know a = 5, plug a = 5 into the given equation 3a − 2b = 9 to get: 3(5) − 2b = 9
Simplify to get: 15 − 2b = 9
Subtract 15 from both sides to get: -2b = -6
Solve: b = 3
We get:
QUANTITY A: 5
QUANTITY B: 3
Answer: A
