Information given : Spinach tins of Brand A and Brand B have the same list price. Let the list price be X
During festival season:
Quantity A: X - 0.75*0.20*x = X - 0.15x = 0.85X
Quantity B:X - 0.80*0.25*x = X - 0.2X = 0.80X
Quantity A should be greater.

Could you please clarify me why the answer is C.

Spinach tins of Brand A and Brand B have the same list price.

Suppose is 100

After the first off

\(A= 75\)

\(B=80\)

After the second

\(75 \times 0.8 = 60\)

\(80 \times 0.75= 60\)

C is the answer

Did you mean to write off list prices or OF list prices?
If it's OF, then your solution is correct.
If it's OFF, then my solution is correct.

I got stuck up with the word 'OFF.
As the question says: Item A sells at 75% OFF list price, I , thus, write 100 ( Say, list price )-75=25 . And again , during festival ,there is a 20% discount . So, .8*25=20

But the math has been done as if the stem say, " Item A sells at 75% the list price, i.e. if the List price =100, then item sells at 75.
Now, my observation is that- is the word OFF correct with the question, or it should be OF ( Instead of OFF)?
Need help.

Since spinach tins of Brand A and Brand B have the same LIST price, we can...
Let X = the LIST price of Brand A spinach
Let X = the LIST price of Brand B spinach

KEY CONCEPT: If an item has an x percent DECREASE in price, then the new price is (100 - x) percent of the original price.
For example, if we reduce the price by 20%, then the new price is 80% of the original price.
If we reduce the price by 40%, then the new price is 60% of the original price.
If we reduce the price by 75%, then the new price is 25% of the original price.



After Brand A has a 75% decrease, the resulting price = 25% of X = 0.25X
After that, Brand A has a 20% decrease. So, the FESTIVAL SEASON price = 80% of 0.25X = (0.8)(0.25X) = 0.20X

After Brand B has an 80% decrease, the resulting price = 20% of X = 0.20X
After that, Brand B has a 25% decrease. So, the FESTIVAL SEASON price = 75% of 0.20X = (0.75)(0.20X) = 0.15X

We get:
Quantity A: 0.20X
Quantity B: 0.15X

Since X is POSITIVE, we can divide both quantities by X to get:
Quantity A: 0.20
Quantity B: 0.15

Answer: A

Consecutive Decrease of the Prices

-75+(-20)+(-75)(-20)/100= 80% discount
-80+(-25)+(-80)(-25)/100= 85% discount

If each is worth $10 then:

10(1-.8)= 2.0 for A
10(1-.85)=1.5 for B

A is greater

I triple check...quadruple check...the answer is C

Reading the stem the items are sold at 75 and 80 % respectively. That means, suppose the starting price is 100, they cost 75 and 80 dollars

Applying the discount the result is 60 dollars for both and the answer should be C

The stem tell us that the price is auctioned at 75% of the original so the off is 25%. NOT it is off 75% and the resulting price is 25. It is the other way around.

So 75% off the list price means off is 25% ??

list price is x and then reduce 25% of x = 0.75 x

then reduce 0.15x from that 0.75x to get cost = 0.60x

What does 0.75x represent? is it the sale price discounted/ final price? and from that we reduce the festive discount to get the final cost?

I am not an English speaker, but 75% off means a cut of 75% haha
Imagine one eager to spend his/her savings, especially because of a 75% OFF super-sale... but then when one gets there, in fact, it is 25% OFF promotion in disguise 😆
