ratio of the number of apples to the number of pears is 3 to 4
So, A : P = 3 : 4
ratio of the number of pears to the number of oranges is 5 to 3
P : O = 5 : 3
We have:
A : P = 3 : 4
P : O = 5 : 3
Notice that we have P in common with each ratio.
So to combine the ratios, we must create equivalent ratios so that we have the same number of PEARS in each ratio.
Take A : 3 : 4 and multiply both values by 5 to create equivalent ratio: A : P = 15 : 20
Take 5 : 3, and multiply both values by 4 to create equivalent ratio: P : O = 20 : 12
We can now combine the ratios to get: A : P : O = 15 : 20 : 12
In this new ratio we can see that there are more apples than oranges.
Answer: A
