Re: x and y are numbers greater than or equal [#permalink]

Hey guys

we are given that x and y ARE NUMBERS greater than or equal 1
and (6x)(7y)=546 ==> 42xy=546 ==> xy=13

and asking which bigger
(A) x-y (B) 12

ok if x=13 and y=1, the answer is C
but we have multiple values of x and y
x= 6.5 y=2
x= 4.333333 y=3
and since we have many values of x and y we cant decide which bigger,

answer D

The answer is C.

---- (6x)(7y)=546
---- 42xy = 546
---- xy = 546/42
---- XY = 13
---- X and Y could be 13 and 1 or -13 and -1
---- if |13 - 1| then answer will be C
---- but it could also be |-13 - (-1)| which would also give us 12.. so answer has to be C

The answer would be (C) if we were told that x and y are integers - but we were not. So, since xy =13 we could have:
x = 13 and y = 1 and |x - y| = 12
x = 26 and y = 0.5 and |x - y| > 12
x = 6.5 and y = 2 and |x - y| < 12
