How could we solve this by choosing a number?

Hi there!

You can find LCM of 250 &275 which is 2750.

How did i get 250 &275 is by adding the fruits that John can buy.

So lets assume John had $2750 to buy the fruits.

Let apples be a & oranges be o

Now, 100a+150o=2750
50a+225o=2750
100a+150o=50a+225o
50a=75o
2a=3o

Here, we can multiply both sides by 50 to get
100a=150o

Thus, the money required to buy 100 apples and 150 oranges is the same.

IMO C

Hope this helps!

Let the whole money he has is X, then:
100 apples=X (*) and
150 oranges=X (**)and
50 apples+225 oranges=x
from (*) and (**)
100 apples=x=150 oranges, then
100 apples=150 oranges
