to find the surface area, check the total area of the both the cubes -> 2*6a^2
Also deduct the common boundary that is 2 *a^2 ( as each face is a^2) . if you compute it gives a value of 176 square units.
In addition to it, if they are joined , it forms a cuboid , so use the empirical formulae -> length * breadth *height = 4 *8* 4 = 128 square units.
