I agree but the question can be solved with a little bit of common sense

Of the 3 ratios x must be the less in the mixture in terms of proportion

The first step says that adding water we do have the last ratio up to 25%

The second step says that adding even more water the middle ratio now is also 25%

At this point x, which was the less, adding water must be even more less

Among the answer choices B,D, and E clearly are too high

C x =1/3 over all is impossible because we do know that just two of them account for the 50% AND at the beginning the other two parts were already the most

The only possible choice is A

3y/(xy + 8y + 6) = 1/4
12y = xy + 8y + 6 --- eq 1

after adding 24 litres

20y = xy + 8y + 30 --- eq 2

eq2 - eq 1 ==> y = 3

substitute y in eq 1 we get x = 2

x/x+8 = 2/10 = 1/5
