After a 15% discount, the price of a computer was $612. What was the price of the computer before the discount?

(A) $108.00
(B) $520.20
(C) $703.80
(D) $720.00
(E) $744.00

Actually we are looking for marked value of the computer.

Discounted price is basically 85% of marked price. it can be shown as follows:

(612 /85)*100

= 720.

The best answer is D.

We can PLUG IN THE ANSWERS, which represent the price before the discount.
Since the discounted price = 612, the original price must be greater than 612.
Eliminate A and B.
When 10% and 5% are subtracted from the correct answer, the result will be 612.

D: 720
720 - (10% of 720 + 5% of 720) = 720 - (72 + 36) = 720 - 108 = 612
Success!
