Let's first calculate the rates of computer X and Y.
Rate of computer X = (240 files) / (4 hours) = 60 files/hour
Rate of computer Y = (240 files) / (8 hours) = 30 files/hour
When working together, the rates of the two computers will add up.
Total rate of both computers = 60 files/hour + 30 files/hour = 90 files/hour
Now, we need to find the time it takes for both computers working together to process 240 files. We can use the formula:
time = amount of work / rate
where "amount of work" is the number of files we want to process, and "rate" is the combined rate of the two computers.
time = (240 files) / (90 files/hour) = 8/3 hours
We can convert this to minutes by multiplying by 60:
time = (8/3) * 60 = 160/3 minutes ≈ 53.3 minutes
Therefore, the answer is approximately 2 hours 53.3 minutes, which is closest to option C: 2 hours 40 minutes.
