Good question.

To me the question as it is formulated is a bit too far on the hardest side for the real GRE. However, it is good for practice.

You have to follow a strategy which is not a reflection of back and forth between the table and the questions. You get lost.

1) The first thing to do is to read very carefully the legend (the instructions at the bottom) and set up your parameters.

2) Looking in this case to the answer choices which are Roman numbers. So if you look at E for instance it says that I and III are true. it is a possible option. BUT if you do know that III option of the stem is false you immediately can eliminate from the pack E but also C because in both you do have the III option which is false.

Now, the instructions say:

1) The difficulty factor is the sum of the products so you need to add after a multiplication between the number of questions of each type, which in the first year from the top is quant 55, then verbal 55 and awa 55 PER the relative difficulty level of each

Cet 1990 - Quant 55*3 = 165; Verbal 55*3=165; awa 55*2=110 and the sum is 440
Cet 1991 - fast forward the sum is 200
Cet 1992 - fast forward the sum is 300

Now the stress factor which is the Difficulty factor divided by the average time per question.

Cet 1990 - 440/44 = 10
Cet 1991 - 200/48=4.6
Cet 1992 - 300/48=6.25

The III question is As the Difficulty Factor increased, the Stress Factor increased which is NOT true
It is 10 then 4.6 then 6.25. So we do have an increase, a decrease, and the once again an increase.

Therefore, III is false and already you do know that C and E are out.

Do the rest and the question is pretty straightforward.
With the calculator, once you do have very clear in your mind the two factors - Difficulty and Stess and how to calculate them which is easy - you can solve this question in about one minute

X increase and Y increase. In a linear progression. Always up both head to head

If X increases and Y increases.

X increases and Y decreases

X increases and Y increases

Up and down NON-linear

(iii) is FALSE,it is NOT true.

Hope now is more clear.

Which one of the following statements can be inferred from t [#permalink]
For this question, I had to calculate individual Difficulty Factor and Stress Factor for each year, pretty tedious
Year |DF |SF |Cutoff mark
1990 |440 |10 |55
1991 |200 |4.2 |65
1992 |350 |7.3 |58
1993 |300 |6.3 |60
1994 |278 |3.9 |68

From the data above, we can order Stress Factor ascending to see that Cutoff mark decreases => (I) is correct
However, as we order Difficulty Factor descending, Cutoff mark doesn't always increase or when we order Difficulty Factor ascending, Stress Factor doesn't always increase
=> A
