Re: In year 2001, which of the following courses had enrolments most near [#permalink]

For convenience

also we can do this way

1. Identify the total number of enrolments: The chart title states "COURSE-WISE DIVISION 50,000 ENROLMENTS IN 2001".
2. List the percentage enrolment for each course in 2001 (and calculate the actual numbe enrolments):

- Mathematics: $5.40 %$ of $\(50,000=0.0540 \times 50,000=2,700\)$

- Physical Education: $9.30 %$ of $\(50,000=0.0930 \times 50,000=4,650\)$

- Humanities: $2 %$ of $\(50,000=0.02 \times 50,000=1,000\)$

- Science: $20 %$ of $\(50,000=0.20 \times 50,000=10,000\)$

- Applied Science: $19.2 %$ of $\(50,000=0.192 \times 50,000=9,600\)$

- Vocational: $20 %$ of $\(50,000=0.20 \times 50,000=10,000\)$

- Mechanical: $3.70 %$ of $\(50,000=0.0370 \times 50,000=1,850\)$

- Arts \& Crafts: $5.00 %$ of $5\(0,000=0.0500 \times 50,000=2,500\)$

- Commerce: $10.30 %$ of $\(50,000=0.1030 \times 50,000=5,150\)$

- Technical: $5.10 %$ of $\(50,000=0.0510 \times 50,000=2,550\)$

3. Count the total number of courses: There are 10 courses listed in the pie chart.

3. Count the total number of courses: There are 10 courses listed in the pie chart.
4. Calculate the average (arithmetic mean) enrolment per course:

Average Enrolment =\(\frac{ Total Enrolments }{ Number of Courses}\)
Average Enrolment $\(=\frac{50,000 }{ 10}=5,000\)$
5. Compare the enrolment of each course in the options to the average $(5,000)$ and find the closest one:
- (A) Science: Enrolment $=10,000$. Difference $=|10,000-5,000|=5,000$
- (B) Physical Education: Enrolment $=4,650$. Difference $=|4,650-5,000|=350$
- (C) Commerce: Enrolment $=5,150$. Difference $=|5,150-5,000|=150$
- (D) Applied Sciences: Enrolment $=9,600$. Difference $=|9,600-5,000|=4,600$
- $(E)$ Vocational: Enrolment $=10,000$. Difference $=|10,000-5,000|=5,000$

The course with the smallest difference from the average is Commerce with a difference of 150.
The final answer is Commerce.
